…on the validity of this Standard

In the foreword to EN 746, it is pointed out that the period of transition from the previous standard has been prolonged. Quote:

Our note on this Standard:

EN 746-2:1996 has not been harmonized to the current Machinery Directive (2006/42 /EC). As this Directive has been applicable since 29 December 2009, the transitional period has expired and EN 746-2:2010 must be applied in every case.

…on this Standard’s scope of application

In Clause 1, the risk due to pressure is pointed out. Quote:

[…] […] The pressure hazard of the piping and components covered by this standard is within the maximum pressure/size relationship as described in normative Annex E. […]

Our note on this Standard:

The diagrams set out in Annex E of the Standard correspond to the conformity assessment diagrams for pipes from Annex II of the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC.
On the basis of these diagrams, classification in the corresponding hazard category is possible. Pressure equipment classified as no higher than Category I that is an integral component of industrial thermoprocessing equipment is formally excluded from the scope of application of the Pressure Equipment Directive. This is based on the assumption that the risk assessment of this equipment pursuant to the Machinery Directive is sufficient from a technical safety point of view and that the manufacturer undertakes the correct steps for the design, also in accordance with Machinery Directive specifications. However, the essential requirements of the Machinery Directive along with this Standard (see 5.2.1.1 and 5.2.1.2) are formulated in rather general terms so that for the design and construction, the application of Standards harmonized to the Pressure Equipment Directive is recommended.  For pipes and equipment that are classified in Category II or higher, application of the Pressure Equipment Directive is mandatory.

You will find further information in our Guide.

In addition, systems that were manufactured before this Standard was published are excluded. Quote:

[…] This European Standard is not applicable to combustion and fuel handling systems as part of IThE which is manufactured before the date of its publication as EN.[…]

Our note on this Standard:

EN 746-2 was published in the Official Journal on 20 October 2010.
