Standards on functional safety

It is up to the manufacturer of thermoprocessing equipment to decide whether to refer to harmonized standards in their product design and production, or to meet the essential requirements stipulated in the EU Directives in a different way.

Elster Kromschröder acts on the basis of harmonized standards in order to offer its customers transparency and safety.

The standards for the sector IEC 62061 (Safety of machinery – Functional safety of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems) and DIN EN ISO 13849 (Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems) are harmonized standards for the Machinery Directive and apply for machinery and thermoprocessing equipment. EN 50156 (Electrical equipment for furnaces and ancillary equipment) is a harmonized standard for the Low Voltage Directive and applies for steam boiler systems.

All three standards use the terms SIL or PL and refer to IEC 61508 (Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems). IEC 61508 and the sector standard IEC 61511 (Functional safety – Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector) apply for process systems.
